What we did in 2006
The
Power of
Ten
came to Tattersalls,
Newmarket on June 20th. 2006
See our Design It Day
report page! Design
It Day page.
This was the 10th Architecture Week, which saw
ImagineNewmarket,
generously sponsored and supported by a number of regional businesses,
deliver a day of thinking about design in concert with a group of
West Suffolk young people.
This years celebration saw ImagineNewmarket hold an
event at
Tattersalls in Newmarket - with staff, resources, display equipment and
materials donated by our partners...
Little
Angels
Day Nursery
The Johns
Practice, Chartered Architects
The
SmithMartin Partnership.
Our generous thanks to them.
Tattersalls,
Europe's leading bloodstock auctioneers, generously made available
their High
Flyers enclosure and building, so that a group of teachers,
children and carers from a number of schools in the West Suffolk
cluster
could attend our 'Let's Design It' Day.
Tattersalls
generously allowed their 8.9 metre octagonal building, with adjoining
facilities, to be used for a superb day of thinking about space,
texture, design and building. Our sincerest thanks to the team at
Tattersalls who helped us to deliver our event and to make
it a success in such high quality surroundings.
Our
delivered work plan for the day is available here.
The
Power of Ten...
Our plan
is to build an Imagination Centre in Newmarket to deliver exciting and
stimulating learning and leaisure to the regions young people. What the
building is, does and looks like was the object our our day on the 20th
June, 2006.
A variety of young people came together to think about
resources, to
invent some new takes on the use of space and community buildings and
to craft some models that could feed further consultation with the
community about ImagineNewmarket.
They did it brilliantly.
Following a welcome and introduction to the day by Tim Young,
Chair of ImagineNewmarket
and with the support of a number of ImagineNewmarket committee
members, the children were invited to think about what 10
might look like?
What it might do and how they could represent it today? Some
great
ideas emerged, which were put on paper and referred back to throughout
the day.
Kate Lockett of the Johns
Practice then led the young people through some ideas about
architecture, shape and variety in buildings and how design affected
the outcome of the builders work.
A set of drawings and design photographs, donated by the
Johns Practice
informed the session.
Sue Martin, of the SmithMartin
Partnership, then brought all ages together for a fun,
interactive story telling session on the 10 Little Pigs and their
travels around the world. Sue's kit bag was laden with concrete, steel,
foam, granite. wood....on and on.
With enthralled listeners wondering what was going to emerge
next.
Younger story helpers were keen not to lose count of the pigs in the
story, whilst older young people were keen to discuss the merit and
contents of concrete.
The morning continued with group work on individual ideas and
designing
plans for an Imagination Centre.
The young people were able to watch a slide show of buildings
and
designs from around the world th stimulate their thinking and
creativity. It did just that.
This session, and the afternoon of crafting and modelling our
designs,
was professionally and encouragingly supported by Joan
Weingaertner and the team from
Little Angels Day Nursery. The Little Angels
Team
and their resources were critical in delivering the excellent models
and design ideas that were created.
Particular thanks to the team of young people from Thurston Community College,
who supported individal groups of young people, in partnership with Little Angels
staff, in the realisation of their ideas.
A big thanks to them and all the Little Angels
crew.
